This. book. was. HILARIOUS. It has all the sass and wit you’d expect from Kelly Kapoor (though there is an entire paragraph devoted to how different she is from the author), along with all the insight, sarcasm, and honesty that only Mindy Kaling could so expertly deliver.
In this conversationally-written book, Kaling covers a variety of topics, from the odd jobs she juggled at the start of her career (I mean, when’s the last time you met someone who worked for a TV psychic?) to karaoke etiquette to her experience writing for The Office.
Some fun things I learned about Mindy (that made me love her even more): she hates roasts and stylists’ attempts to hide her body instead of embrace it. Her love for comedy started at a young age. She remembers and treasures the first true friend she ever made. Oh, and she’s also a huge Amy Poehler fan.
My only criticism is that some of her jokes pushed the envelope a bit too much. You’ll know what I mean when you read them–they’re the type that make you cringe instead of laugh, like this one: “…they say the best revenge is living well. I say it’s acid in the face–who will love them now?” However, that was about the worst one and these jokes are few and far between.
Overall, I would recommend this book! It’s an easy read, quite relatable, and full of moments that will actually make you laugh out loud. Mindy, you’ve done it again.
